Advocate Avadh Bihari Kaushik filed a petition in the Apex Court seeking Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or a Special Investigation Team (SIT) inquiry into the tragic death of elephant in Kerala’s Silent Valley Forest. The horrific incident occurred when the elephant consumed a pineapple containing firecrackers, leading to an explosion in her mouth. The petitioner also highlighted that it is not the first time that a female elephant had died. He cited a previous death of a female elephant in Kollam district of Kerala in April 2020.

The petition states, “a Court Monitored investigation of the above two cases of killings of elephants, as noted above, being reported from time to time, is directed by this Hon’ble Court to be conducted through CBI or SIT consisting of experts from various departments headed by Retired Judge of this Hon’ble Court”

Kaushik in his plea laid emphasis that the brutal killing of elephant is illegal as according to schedule I of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 elephant is a protected wildlife animal. He also contended that the “concerned authorities have failed to prevent such killing of protected animal despite the laws in place”. The National Green Tribunal registered suo motu case over the death of pregnant elephant on June 6, 2020.
