An agreement signed on June 11 enables International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (Itlos) or one of its chambers to sit and exercise its functions in Singapore. Itlos president Jin-Hyun Paik and K. Shanmugam, Minister for Law and Home Affairs signed the model agreement in a virtual ceremony through video conference.
The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea is situated in Hamburg and was established by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCOS). Singapore became the first external country where the tribunal or its chambers may sit and exercise its functions.
