The Madras High Court on hearing a suo moto petition on the alleged custodial death of a father-son duo, in Thoothukudi ,Tamil Nadu who were arrested after they allegedly had altercation with the police for keeping their shop open beyond permitted hours. The bench took a serious view on this issue and stated “The government should come up with the ideas to alleviate work stress of the police personnel”. The court suggested psychological counselling for police officials so that they could “handle such situations calmly”.

The bench recorded the submissions of  K Chellapandian (AAG) that the DGP, pursuant to observations of the court in an earlier hearing, issued on Thursday containing Standard Operating Procedures to be followed by all police personnel in the state during lockdown. He further added that the DGP had spoken to the Chief Secretary for the formation of a high-level committee to frame guidelines. Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanswani and Deputy Chief Minister Palaniswani granted a solatium of Rs 25 lakh on behalf of the AIADMK to the bereaved family.
